SYMPTOMS

The presence or absence of symptoms is very poor indication of your health. If you have no symptoms it doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy. Likewise the presence of symptoms is not always a bad thing.

Is a Lack of Symptoms a Sign of Health?

How often have you heard of a friend, family member or acquaintance who visited their family Doctor for a check-up and received a “clean bill of health”. Only a few weeks later the person is diagnosed with a serious illness that eventually takes their life. A good example of this is cancer. It may be present in our body for years before it eventually spreads to the point where it will create any palpable symptoms. Was this person healthy before they experienced their first symptom? Pain or other symptoms will be the last thing to go when that problem is being corrected.

Symptoms Fact 1 – Symptoms are the last thing to appear, and first things to go when there is a problem.

Are Symptoms a Sign of Disease?

You need to change your thinking from symptoms being a bad thing to being a positive thing. First of all, symptoms are telling you that indeed something is wrong. This gives you the incentive to take action that will help raise your health potential (this may include rest, improved diet or seeing your chiropractor). Secondly, the expression of symptoms is mostly your body adapting in a healthy manner to its changing environment.

We think of a fever in a bacterial infection as being bad. Medical thinking is to reduce the temperature as soon as possible with medication or through a cold bath. Chiropractors have long known what researchers are proving today; a fever is the body responding naturally to fight off the invading bacteria. The fever is not caused by the bacteria; it is manufactured by the body’s own Innate Intelligence to kill the micro-organism. Some bacteria find 37 degrees, our average body temperature an ideal place to live. When the temperature is raised in your body by a fever, it helps to destroy the bacteria at a greater rate, speeding up your recovery time. Would it then make sense to fool your body’s own healing response by trying to bring down a fever with medication?

Another way to think of your body working correctly when you experience symptoms is with food poisoning; your body will experience some rather nasty vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. These reactions are your body performing properly under the circumstances. The Innate Intelligence of the Body, that protects and heals your body, is doing everything in its power to remove the poison as efficiently as it can. Although the discomfort of illness is never welcomed, you can sometimes be thankful for symptoms.

Symptoms Fact 2 – Symptoms are often a sign that the body is working properly under the circumstances.

Chiropractic Approach to Symptoms

At Central Chiropractic, the presence or absence of symptoms does not include or exclude you from care. Symptoms are an unreliable means of determining health so they are not used as criteria for care. The only determining factor for Chiropractic is the presence of Vertebral Subluxations. A Vertebral Subluxation will interfere with the function of the nervous system causing your body to adapt to its surrounding environment at less than its optimal level. Over time, Subluxations will reduce your body’s performance before manifesting symptoms. It may take only a few weeks or several decades before Subluxations cause any adverse effects that become evident as disease in the affected organs or tissues. The question is… do you want to wait for symptoms to appear before you do anything about Subluxations?

Many people use Chiropractic as a means of prevention. Patients will have suffered with reflux/indigestion for many years. After a series of Chiropractic adjustments their reflux will most likely improve. Logic tells us, if they had chiropractic care before the onset of reflux they would have never suffered from the pain & discomfort in the first place.

While under regular Chiropractic care, most people find that they get sick less often. They continue with regular maintenance care as a means of preventing these and other problems from returning. Prevention is a good idea and it is a lot smarter to be proactive towards health rather than waiting for a problem to surface.

Prevention is still only the tip of the iceberg with regards to chiropractic care. Chiropractic is ultimately designed to be a means of attaining optimal performance from your life and health. Even when symptoms aren’t relieved through chiropractic, life channels are kept open so the pathways are clear to carry all of the vital life messages throughout the body. When this is maintained on a regular basis, years are added to life and life is added to those years.

Don’t put faith in symptoms to tell you how healthy you are. Be proactive in creating your health rather than waiting for things to go wrong before you take action. A few simple activities will allow you to get the most out of your life and health. Eat good food, get plenty of rest, exercise regularly, keep a positive mental attitude and most importantly, maintain a health spine. It doesn’t get any more simple than that.
